The naked truth

The 20-something Hollywood starlet Heidi Montag shocked us all when she transformed herself from pretty girl next door to plastic doll. In my opinion, in an attempt to enhance what Mother Nature had bestowed upon her, Montag went completely overboard in her quest for perfection. And yet, in typing this very sentence -- at 37 years old -- I still feel insecure about my own physical flaws, and Montag's record number of surgeries has spurred me to contemplate whether cosmetic surgery is a viable option for me to consider.

exploiting insecurities?

At the tender age of 16, I can still recall my cheeks getting flushed with embarrassment as my grandmother looked me square in the jaw, amid a table brimming with my extended family, and made this very public statement; "Melissa you would be such a beautiful girl if you only got a nose job. Would you like me to give you one as a present for your birthday?"

I simply cannot convey how many degrees my self esteem plummeted at that very moment, not to mention the fact that up until then, I thought nothing of the state of my nose. However, once those words sunk into my consciousness, I became utterly obsessed with my nose and its imperfections. Of course once I made the decision not to have the surgery, while the insecurities remained, I tucked them deep away.

Yet, somehow, seeing Heidi Montag's complete transformation via surgery has my feelings about my physical inadequacies bubbling to the surface. It also has me questioning what triggered Ms. Montag's decision; was it her own feelings of insecurity about her appearance or was there another voice influencing her decision? And, of course, I wonder how different my life may have been had I opted for that surgery at 17.

Yet, all that being said, there is something so noble about a woman who chooses to keep every line, wrinkle and imperfection in her face because, in my opinion, it's a testament to a full, hard-earned life, rich with experience. Still the seductive lure of surgery, regardless of one's age, is hard to resist as Montag's actions demonstrate.

So, is there really anything wrong with getting a little nip/tuck?

Lisa Goell-Sinicki always swore she'd never get plastic surgery and now, at 46, finds herself constantly wondering what she'd look like with a little help

"When someone like Heidi -- who was attractive to start with -- goes for it, where does it leave those of us regular middle-aged moms?" says Goell-Sinicki. "Everyone always talks about how Sally Field is aging naturally, but I suspect she's had just a little help to look so great at, what, 64? I hope I never succumb, but you never know. It's like smoking pot when you're a teen: You swear you never will, but then everyone else is, and that makes it seem so harmless."Fifty-something mom Chris Moyer, who is scheduled to undergo a mini-facelift, upper and lower eye work and a Fraxel, asserts her decision has nothing to do with vanity.

"I am a computer programmer and work for people younger than myself," says Ms. Moyer, who feels a more youthful appearance will help her get a leg up in the workplace and work to her advantage, should she ever need to look for another job. "If I do not have the surgery, they will turn me off the moment I walk through the door."

According to Moyer, not a single negative has been voiced regarding her decisions. In fact her daughter who works in HR completely supports her decision.

"While she says, 'You don't need it,' she understands why I am doing it," says Ms. Moyer. "I think in Heidi's case she was looking for the attention. For her, my fear is, once all of the hype dies down, she will be looking for something else to get noticed, and it could get dangerous for her."

I decided to get to the bottom of this by talking to a plastic surgeon, Dr. Vip Dev, a board-eligible surgeon in Bakersfield, Calif. (You can check out the interview here). I must say, after my chat with him, I'm thinking twice about going under the knife. After all, the intent of plastic surgery is to stand out. But how can you stand out when you want to look like somebody else? Sorry, Heidi. You're on your own on this one.

Sex up your style

The modern day pinup brings back the art of burlesque.

Dita Von Teese seems to be in a class all her own – in an entertainment scene that seems to be ruled by stick-thin physiques and tights worn as pants, this burlesque superstar is bringing an old Hollywood sense of style to the spotlight.

Originally, Von Teese was an avid practiser of ballet and wanted to be a ballerina. While this plan fell through, her background in dancing would later help her onstage during her burlesque shows.

nspired by past stars such as Bettie Page and Gypsy Rose Lee, Von Teese wasted no time in starting her career as soon as she was old enough. After working in a lingerie shop in high school

and studying costume design in college, she picked a new name after German actress Dita Parlo.

Skin signals

Aging skin is inevitable. No matter how well you've taken care of yourself, wrinkles will eventually make their way onto your face. But sometimes the signs of aging appear too early on the skin and indicate a serious problem. There can be a vast difference between what is considered 'normal' skin aging on your face and what should send you to a dermatologist ASAP.

What's Normal

Dr. Susan Stuart, chief of the division of dermatology at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California, and a dermatologist recognized by the American Research Council, says changes in skin are "both progressive and additive." Here are some of changes that you can expect to see on your face as you age:

Pigmentary Changes

In your 30s, your skin may start to show signs of discoloration called dyschromia. Melasma, a brown discoloration often due to sun exposure, is also possible. It's more common in women with darker skin tones. Applying skin lightening creams that contain hydroquinone and retinoic acid can help. Be careful though, since pigmentary changes can also be a sign of skin cancer or a more serious condition, especially if they occur around a mole.

Fine Facial Lines

Rhytids, another name for wrinkles, may start to form around your eyes in your 30s and may be due to genetics -- people with fair skin who burn easily tend to age more quickly than those with olive or darker skin color, Dr. Stuart says. Eye creams will help, but protecting the area with sunscreen and protective eyewear is most effective, since the sun breaks down collagen causing volume loss, says Dr. David E. Bank, founder and director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery in California and author of Beautiful Skin: Every Woman’s Guide to Looking her Best at Any Age.

Marionette Marks

The wrinkles that extend down from the corners of your mouth, called marionette lines, may pop up in your 40s, along with lines on your forehead. Dermal fillers, which replace the lost volume between the mouth and chin, can be helpful to treat these lines.

Deeper Facial Wrinkles and Neckbands

As you age into your 50s, you might see deeper facial lines emerge around your mouth and face that give a sagging look to the cheeks and neck. Neck bands also become more prominent. You can delay these changes by cleansing and moisturizing your neck and applying daily a rejuvenating skin cream specially designed for the neck. If you already have these issues and are looking for procedures to remove them, light skin peels, thermage, microdermabrasion and Botox can help smoothen and prevent further wrinkles, Dr. Bank says.

What's Not Normal

Other changes in your facial skin are caused by habit, especially smoking and sunbathing. Both can not only cause early signs of aging to mark your mug, but can also increase chances of several types of skin cancer.

A Sallow Complexion

If you are a smoker, your skin is going to grow sallow and coarse. Puffing on a cigarette will also speed up the appearance of facial lines and make them deeper, especially around the mouth in the form of "smoker's lines." Quitting smoking is the most helpful way to stop these wrinkles in their tracks.

Pigmentary Changes in Your 20s

Though an eventual sign of aging, pigmentary changes in your 20s mean you've probably worshipped the sun. Sun bathing can also cause deep wrinkles to show earlier. Keep sun exposure to a minimum and apply moisturizers with SPF to prevent further damage or use make-up with SPF.

Broken Blood Vessels

Also known as telamgiectasia, small, dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin or mucous membranes can pop up after too much sun exposure. They can develop anywhere on the body, but are most commonly seen on the face around the nose, cheeks and chin. Laser treatment is the most effective way to remove these marks.

Lesions and Changing Moles

Lesions that crust and bleed can be an early sign of skin cancer. Moles that suddenly change size, color or shape may indicate malignant melanoma -- the most deadly type of the disease. Scan your body for changes in moles or marks once a month, and visit the dermatologist once a year for a check-up.

Sun of a...

Sun worshippers, take heed: Summer is upon us! You must protect your delicate skin from the sun's harsh rays, but that doesn't mean you have to hide inside all season. Here, we offer the expertise of Dr. Neel Patel with Southwest Skin Specialists in Scottsdale, Ariz. This summer, enjoy the sun, but never, ever break these 10 commandments of sunscreen.

10. Thou shalt not skimp

According to Dr. Patel, "Most people only apply 25 to 50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. The average person should apply 1 ounce, or one shot-glass, of sunscreen per application. Be sure to apply 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. A 12-ounce bottle should only last for 12 applications. Don't forget the ears, lips, neck, nose, hands and feet."

He suggests Elta MD 30 and 41 for daily use because they go well with cosmetics, as well as Ocean Potion Face and Neutrogena Ultrasheer Body Mist, which are ideal for those with acne-prone skin. Dr. Patel adds, "Avoid spray sunscreens on the face, if possible."

9. Thou shalt reapply frequently

Don't assume that once you've slathered on one coat of sunscreen, you are good to go for the whole day. In fact, Dr. Patel says sunscreen should be applied every two hours.

8. Thou shalt not use "i don't burn, I tan" as an excuse

Just because you may not burn easily, doesn't mean your complexion protects you from UV damage or skin cancer. Dr. Patel says, "One's ability to tan does not confer immunity to skin cancer. Furthermore, sunscreen prevents premature aging of the skin in all skin types."

7. Thou shalt apply, even on cold, cloudy days

According to Dr. Patel, "Sunscreen should be applied everyday. Though windows filter UVB, we are incurring UVA damage while driving or next to a window at work. Since many skin cancers are the result of cumulative ultraviolet exposure, the small amounts of sunlight we get on a daily basis can result in tumors later in life."

So don't take any chances. And don't slack on your sunscreen routine if it's overcast. You might feel a false sense of security when the clouds are covering up the sun, but that's no time to skip the sunscreen. Dr. Patel points out that "80 percent of ultraviolet radiation is present on cloudy days. Water and snow can reflect 80 percent of UV radiation. Sand reflects 25 percent."

6. Thou shalt read thy labels

Whether you are selecting a natural, organic, chemical-free or commercial sunscreen, there are a few things you should be sure your sunscreen includes. Dr. Patel advises, "Make sure that sunscreen has high concentrations of zinc and titanium for broad spectrum UVA/UVB coverage.

Though vitamins E and C are good free radical scavengers and help minimize DNA injury, their effectiveness is highly dependent on their purity, stability and concentration, which are not reported on most products. I believe that both traditional and organic sunscreens can be effective and safe based on their ingredients." For a natural alternative, check out BareMinerals SPF 30 Natural sunscreen.

But don't feel you need to spend a wad of cash to get the best results when it comes to sunscreen protection. Dr. Patel maintains that while price matters a little, "ingredients are the most important aspect." He suggests major brands, such as Blue Lizard, Vanicream, or Ortho-Neutrogena.

Budget alternatives to your favorite beauty splurges

Trade this for that

Every woman knows that beauty products can break the bank -- but only if you let them. Some of the price tags on our go-to favorites are painful, yet we buy them anyway because it's hard to find affordable alternatives that actually work as well. In the interest of saving money while remaining your beautiful self, Katie Betian, a Los Angeles-based aesthetician and make-up artist, shares some professional secrets that will help you choose reasonably priced products without sacrificing results.

Mascara

For many, finding the perfect mascara can seem like a lifelong quest. Once you discover one that works for you, it's tough to let go. But, with prices reaching beyond the $20 range, you may think twice about applying that second coat. According to Betian, 'Mascara is all about the brush. Look for one that has a lot of bristles to help separate, lengthen and define. Sparse bristles will lead to clumps.' Another tip: make-up artists will often use two different mascaras, one for length and the other for thickness. If you want to experiment with this tip, apply the volume formula first and follow with the lengthening, even if it's just on the ends of your lashes.

Trade This:

DiorShow ($24) or Benefit Bad Gal Lash ($19)

For That:

L'Oreal Extra Volume Collagen Mascara (around $8) or Cover Girl LashBlast Volume Blasting Mascara ($8)

Easy eye makeup step by step

Kick off spring with a bang: Try out some of spring's newest eye shadow trends. Here, we break them down step by step to make stunning springtime eyes a breeze.

Smoky eyes

Creating the smoky-eye look for spring is super simple. Just remember: This season replaces black and charcoal shades with violet and navy blue.

For violet smoky eyes:

  1. Apply a matte cream-colored eye shadow across your entire eyelid.
  2. Next, use a dark violet shadow along the lash line and blend into the crease of your eyelid.
  3. Then, use a very light pink eye shadow just above where the violet shadow ends, and use fingers to blend up toward your brow.
  4. Use violet eyeliner to line the insides of your eyelid, and then draw a thicker line across your lash line (with the same eyeliner). Use a small brush to blend it in.
  5. To finish this look, try Covergirl Lashblast Volume Blasting Mascara; full lashes are a great way to make eyes look big and sultry.

Think pink

This spring, it's go big or go home when it comes to color, and we are seeing some truly bright hues of pink. Just remember to be modest when applying the shadow: Let the color speak for itself.

  1. Cover eyelid with a light pink eye shadow (all the way under your brow).
  2. Use a vibrant pink shadow along your lid and blend up into the crease (remember to work away from the corner of your eye).
  3. Then use a darker shade of pink (borderline plum shade) and work it into your crease; start halfway and sweep it toward the outside of your eye.
  4. Next, use a soft black eyeliner to line the inside and outside of your eyes.
  5. For a flawless look, finish with black lengthening mascara. One of the best out there is Dior DiorShow Mascara at Sephora for $24.

Warm metallic

Amber and gold are perfect for giving your eyes a warm glow that's perfectly suited for this spring:

  1. Use a gold or amber shade on your lower lid and blend slightly above your crease. The best way to do this is to start from the corner of your eye and work up and out toward the outside corner of your eyebrow.
  2. Then, work a dark chestnut color into your crease and blend up and out (similar to above). This time, start mid-crease.
  3. Next, brush just a light dusting of a warm, taupe color across the upper lid. Maybelline’s Silken Taupe Eye Shadow is perfect for this look.
  4. To finish, line with black eyeliner and your favorite lengthening mascara.

Coral

Coral shades from head to toe are in this spring, but for the eyes, try something a bit more subtle. This will create a look perfect for any spring day.

  1. Start by lightly brushing coral eye shadow from the corner of your eye into your crease. Then, use a light champagne color where you left off and work it up towards your brow.
  2. Fill your crease with a vivid color of coral. Try Smashbox Eye Shadow in "Flamingo."
  3. To finish this look, use your favorite black eyeliner and mascara.

Eyes that shimmer

If you want eyes that shine this spring, go for silver and iridescent white shades. This soft yet sophisticated look is so simple to create!

  1. Brush your entire eyelid with a matte nude eye shadow, all the way up to the bottom of your eyebrow. This will help hold the color in the next step.)
  2. Next, apply an iridescent white eye shadow, covering your entire eyelid. MAC White Frost Eye Shadow is perfect for this look.
  3. Apply navy eyeliner on the inside of your eyelids as well as along your lashes. Try to keep it neat; liquid eyeliner is great for your lash line because it creates a smooth look (just remember to apply in one quick line).
  4. Fill in your eyebrows with a brow pencil to keep them from looking washed out.
  5. Lastly, use a black lengthening mascara to give your eyes that extra oomph.

7 Skin care rules dermatologists swear by

Want smooth, pretty, age-defying skin? We thought so. Who better to learn from than the pros who think about dermal health all day long? From what you eat to when you wash your face, here are 7 small changes that can make a big difference in tone, texture, and overall glow.

1. Suds up at night

"The most important time to wash your face is before you hit the sack," says Doris Day, MD, a New York City–based dermatologist. Dirt, bacteria, and makeup left on overnight can irritate skin, clog pores, and trigger breakouts. Remove this top layer of grime with a gentle face wash (skin should feel pleasantly tight for 10 to 15 minutes post-cleansing), which also allows anti-agers to penetrate deeper for better results. Because oil production dips with hormonal changes in your 40s, cleansing twice daily can dry out your complexion and make wrinkles look more pronounced. To refresh skin in the morning, splash with lukewarm water.

2. Be UV obsessed

Nothing is more important than wearing sunscreen (ideally, SPF 30) every day if you want younger-looking skin. Even 10 minutes of daily exposure to UVA "aging" rays can cause changes that lead to wrinkles and sunspots in as few as 12 weeks. If your moisturizer isn't formulated with a built-in broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen, be sure to apply one daily to block both UVA and UVB rays.

3. Manage stress

Emotional upheavals can make your skin look 5 years older than your chronological age, says New York City dermatologist and psychiatrist Amy Wechsler, MD, author of The Mind-Beauty Connection. Constant anxiety increases the stress hormone cortisol, which causes inflammation that breaks down collagen. It also triggers a chain of responses that can lead to facial redness and acne flare-ups. To quell inflammation, eat antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, oranges, and asparagus. When you're feeling tense, Wechsler recommends a few minutes of deep breathing (inhale through your nose, hold for 3 counts, and release through your mouth).

4. Use a retinoid

Research shows that these vitamin-A derivatives speed cell turnover and collagen growth to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and fade brown spots. Prescription-strength retinoids such as Renova provide the fastest results--you'll start to see changes in about a month. To help skin acclimate to any redness and peeling, apply just a pea-size drop to your face every third night, building up to nightly usage. Milder OTC versions (look for retinol) are gentler, although it can take up to 3 months to see noticeable results.

5. Update your routine

Altering even one thing in your regimen every 6 to 12 months jump-starts more impressive improvements in tone and texture. "When you apply products consistently, your skin slides into maintenance mode after about a year," says New Orleans dermatologist Mary P. Lupo, MD. To keep your skin primed for rejuvenation, substitute a cream that contains alpha hydroxy acids for your prescription retinoid twice a week to boost the benefits. Or bump up your OTC retinoid to an Rx formula.

6. Eat omega-3s

These "good fats" in foods such as salmon, flaxseed, and almonds boost hydration, which keeps skin supple and firm. The same isn't true of the saturated fat in dairy products and meats, which increase free-radical damage that makes skin more susceptible to aging. Limit saturated fat intake to about 17 g daily.

7. Exercise regularly

Studies find that women who work out regularly have firmer skin than similar nonexercisers. The reason: Exercise infuses skin with oxygen and nutrients needed for collagen production. To keep your skin toned, make time for at least three 30-minute heart-pumping workouts per week.
